On an ordinary laptop with the correct charger, performance mainly depends on system power limits, cooling, firmware, and adapter capacity. But some laptops can perform worse without usable battery power.
Dell documents a feature called Hybrid Power on certain Alienware systems. Under heavy CPU/GPU loads, the laptop can combine power from the AC adapter and battery to maintain performance. Dell says when the battery falls below 20%, Hybrid Power is disabled and the computer can throttle under heavy loading.

Why some gaming laptops use the battery even while plugged in
A power adapter has a rated output.
Under a short heavy load, a high-performance laptop may demand more power than the adapter is intended to supply continuously by itself.
A manufacturer can solve that in several ways:

A surge protector does not keep the laptop alive during a blackout. If uninterrupted power is the goal, you need battery backup, not just surge suppression.

Can removing the battery damage the laptop?
Removing a user-removable battery according to the manufacturer’s instructions should not inherently damage a laptop that supports AC-only operation.
The risk rises when the battery is internal.
