A laptop that says “plugged in, not charging” does not automatically have a dead battery. The right fix depends on the symptom. A laptop that runs normally but stops at 80% is different from one that never recognizes the charger. A gaming laptop that loses charge while plugged in can also be drawing more power than its adapter or dock supplies.

Before changing settings, identify the exact symptom.

“Slow charger” or a battery that falls while plugged in points more strongly toward insufficient adapter power, an unsuitable cable, the wrong USB-C port, or a dock that cannot pass enough power. No charging symbol suggests the adapter may not be recognized. Battery not detected is a separate communication or hardware fault.
A repeatable ceiling such as 60%, 80%, or 95% is especially important: check intentional charge thresholds before replacing hardware.
Cause 1 · Power source
1. Test the outlet and every physical connection
Start outside the laptop. Connect another known-working device to the wall outlet, or try the laptop charger in a different outlet. Avoid diagnosing through a questionable power strip, travel adapter, or extension lead on the first test.
Then disconnect and reconnect the charger firmly. If the adapter has a detachable AC cord, reseat that connection too. Some power bricks have an indicator LED; if the light is normally on but goes out when connected to the laptop, the adapter or charging circuit may be detecting a fault.
If the laptop starts charging from another outlet, you have already isolated the problem away from the battery.

2. Verify that the charger has the correct power rating
A connector that physically fits is not proof that a charger is appropriate. Laptops can require substantially more power than phones, tablets, and lightweight USB-C accessories. The adapter must support the voltage and power profile expected by the computer.

An underpowered charger may run the laptop yet provide little or no surplus power for the battery. Under a heavy workload, the battery can continue to fall even with the power cable connected.
With USB-C, do not assume a higher number printed on one component guarantees full charging. The laptop, adapter, cable, and charging port all participate in power negotiation. The usable result is limited by the weakest or incompatible part in that chain.
Cause 3 · USB-C chain
3. Check the USB-C port, cable, charger, and dock as one system
USB-C is convenient because one connector can carry power, data, video, and docking functions—but that flexibility also creates confusion. Not every USB-C port on every laptop accepts charging, and not every cable is designed for the same power level.

Cause 4 · Intentional limit
4. Make sure the laptop is not intentionally limiting charge
One of the most common false alarms is a battery-protection feature doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Windows 11 itself supports the Smart charging experience when the device manufacturer implements it. When active, Windows may show a heart on the battery icon and hold the battery below 100%. Microsoft describes this as intentional behavior to reduce time spent at a high state of charge.
Surface devices can automatically limit charging to 80% under Smart charging. Lenovo documentsLenovo Support Conservation Mode and custom charge thresholds that can stop some systems around 55–60%, while some ThinkPads may avoid immediately topping up when already near full. Other manufacturers provide similar “Battery Care,” “Battery Health,” “Primarily AC,” or custom threshold controls in their utilities or BIOS.
On current macOS versions, Optimized Battery Charging and Charge LimitApple Support can intentionally stop charging below 100% on supported Macs. Apple also notes that battery health management can temporarily pause charging.
So if the laptop consistently stops at a predictable percentage and otherwise works normally, check the manufacturer's battery utility or firmware settings before assuming the battery is defective.
Cause 5 · Temperature
5. Let an overheated laptop cool before testing
Battery charging is temperature-sensitive. Charging circuitry can reduce or pause charging when the device or battery is outside its preferred temperature range.
Apple explicitly notesApple Support that if a Mac will not charge past 80% after charge-optimization settings are ruled out, battery temperature may be too high. Microsoft similarly uses elevated temperature as one of the conditions that can trigger Smart charging on supported Surface devices.
Move the laptop to a cool, well-ventilated surface. Do not test it on bedding, upholstery, direct sunlight, inside a hot vehicle, or with ventilation openings blocked. If the power brick is unusually hot, allow it to cool as well.
Cause 6 · Heavy workload
6. Check whether the laptop is consuming more power than the adapter supplies
“Plugged in” does not guarantee the battery percentage will rise. A workstation or gaming laptop under heavy CPU/GPU load can consume more power than a low-wattage adapter or dock delivers.

Microsoft makes the same practical point in its Windows slow-charging guidance: an adapter that does not meet the device requirements can result in slow charging or discharging while connected.
Close high-load applications and watch the battery for several minutes. Better yet, shut the computer down and leave the compatible charger connected. If the battery begins gaining charge while the laptop is off but not during heavy use, the charging path may be functioning while the power source is simply undersized for the workload.
Cause 7 · Controller state
7. Restart the laptop and perform a safe power reset when the manufacturer recommends it
Charging controllers, embedded controllers, firmware, and operating-system power management can occasionally enter a bad state. A normal restart is therefore worth doing before more advanced troubleshooting.
If a restart does not help, follow the model manufacturer's documented power-reset procedure. The exact sequence varies. HP's battery troubleshooting, for example, uses a hard reset that disconnects external devices and AC power before holding the power button for a specified period. Dell also documents a residual-power reset in charging troubleshooting.
Do not copy a random reset sequence from another laptop brand, and do not open a sealed laptop just because an old guide tells you to remove the battery. Modern internal batteries often require specific service steps.
Cause 8 · Physical connection
8. Inspect the charging port and cable for damage or debris
Look closely at the charging connector. A USB-C plug that only works at an angle, a loose barrel jack, damaged pins, frayed insulation, scorched plastic, or intermittent charging when the cable moves points toward a physical problem.
Power off and disconnect the laptop before cleaning. Microsoft recommends checking USB-C ports for dirt and using compressed air where appropriate. Apple recommends keeping charging ports clean and dry and testing another appropriate charging cable when a cable fault is suspected.
Avoid metal tools inside a charging port. If you see bent contacts, a broken center pin, melted plastic, liquid contamination, or a port that has separated from the chassis, stop experimenting with different chargers and arrange service.

9. On Windows, refresh battery-device detection cautiously
Windows exposes battery devices through Device Manager. Some laptop manufacturers, including Dell, document uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery device and restarting Windows so the operating system can detect and reinstall it.
Before changing devices, save your work and make sure you have stable external power. Then follow the support instructions for your laptop model rather than deleting unrelated ACPI or system devices.
If the battery disappears again after restart, shows “not detected,” or the computer immediately powers off when unplugged, move toward manufacturer diagnostics instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same device entry.

10. Update BIOS, firmware, and manufacturer power-management software
Charging behavior is partly controlled below Windows or macOS. Firmware determines how the laptop recognizes an adapter, negotiates charging, protects the battery, and communicates status to the operating system.

11. Run the manufacturer's battery and adapter diagnostics
Once simple checks fail, diagnostics help separate the battery from the charger and charging circuit.
Dell's current tools can test the battery through SupportAssist/ePSA and report AC-adapter recognition in BIOS. HP provides Battery CheckHP Support and separate AC-adapter testing. Apple provides Battery Health status and Apple Diagnostics. Other manufacturers have their own preboot or support utilities.
These tools are more valuable than generic “battery fixer” applications because they can use model-specific firmware data and service thresholds. If the manufacturer diagnostic returns a failure code, save it. It may be needed for warranty or repair support.

12. Check battery health when the laptop works only on AC power
A battery can be detected yet too degraded to store useful energy. Common clues include the laptop shutting off immediately after the charger is removed, extremely short unplugged runtime, sudden charge-percentage drops, or a manufacturer battery test reporting poor condition.

Cause 13 · Detection failure
13. Treat “battery not detected” as its own fault
If Windows shows a red X, says no battery is present, or firmware diagnostics cannot see the battery, the problem is different from a normal battery that simply pauses charging.
An internal battery connection can be loose after service, the battery electronics may have failed, the controller may not be communicating, or the system board may have a fault. A battery that is physically present but electronically invisible cannot be diagnosed accurately from a capacity percentage alone.
Cause 14 · Percentage ceiling
14. Understand why charging may stop at 60%, 80%, 95%, or another limit
A repeated ceiling is often useful evidence.
Around 55–60%: Lenovo documents this range for systems using Conservation Mode or custom charge thresholds. Other brands may offer similar desk-use modes.
Around 80%: Smart charging, battery-care modes, or a manually selected charge limit are common explanations. Surface Smart charging can hold supported devices at 80%, and current Macs can use Optimized Battery Charging or Charge Limit behavior.
Around 95–100%: Some systems deliberately avoid tiny top-up cycles when the battery is already nearly full. Lenovo documents a self-protection behavior where charging may not restart immediately in the upper range.
A percentage ceiling that changes when you alter the official charge-limit setting is not a battery failure. A ceiling that remains despite the limit being disabled—especially with a hardware diagnostic error—deserves deeper investigation.
Cause 15 · Hardware failure
15. Know when the problem needs hardware service
Stop software troubleshooting when the evidence points to unsafe or failed hardware.
Seek qualified service if the charging port is physically loose or burned, the charger sparks or repeatedly shuts off, firmware reports the correct charger but the battery still fails diagnostics, the battery is not detected after model-specific troubleshooting, or the system board charging circuit is suspected.
Physical battery swelling is more urgent. Warning signs include a raised trackpad, a keyboard or bottom cover lifting, gaps in the chassis, or a laptop that no longer sits flat. Do not press a swollen chassis closed. Do not pierce, bend, or crush the battery. Follow the laptop manufacturer's service and recycling instructions.
Isolate the failed part
How to tell whether the battery, charger, or charging port is responsible
Use changes in behavior to isolate the component. If the laptop charges normally with another known-compatible adapter, the original charger or cable becomes the main suspect. If the same charger works through one USB-C charging port but not another supported charging port, the problem may be localized to the port. If firmware reports the adapter as “Unknown” or at the wrong wattage, focus on the adapter, connector, or charging-input circuit before blaming battery capacity.
The battery becomes a stronger suspect when the adapter is recognized correctly, the laptop operates normally on AC power, no charging limit is active, and the manufacturer's battery test reports failure—or when the machine turns off immediately after being unplugged. A battery-health report can add context about wear, but it cannot prove that the charger or charging circuit is healthy.
If neither a known-good adapter nor a known-good battery changes the symptom, board-level charging circuitry may require professional diagnosis. This is one reason replacing random parts is usually more expensive than following a controlled test sequence.

For Windows 11, start with the original or approved charger connected directly to the laptop.
