The EPA takes a broader hazard-management view: its April 2026 lithium-ion battery guidance states that swelling indicates battery damage and is a potential fire hazard.
These statements are not a reason to keep using a swollen laptop while debating terminology. They point to the same practical action: treat a swollen battery as damaged, stop normal use, and arrange proper service or disposal.

Can a swollen laptop battery explode or catch fire?
A swollen battery does not automatically mean a fire or explosion is about to happen. Many swollen laptop batteries are discovered during routine repair without an active thermal event.

Should you keep charging a swollen battery?
No. Do not keep charging it to see whether the percentage rises, to run a calibration, or to create another battery report.
Charging produces electrical and thermal stress, and OEM guidance generally directs users to disconnect AC when swelling is found. HP specifically recommends disconnecting the notebook from AC power. Dell also instructs users to stop using the battery and disconnect external power as part of its handling workflow.

Some devices do have manufacturer-supported self-repair procedures. But “the battery is technically replaceable” is not the same as “a swollen battery is an ideal first DIY repair.”

A damaged battery can require different packaging and transport rules from a normal end-of-life battery. Do not assume that every retail battery drop box accepts swollen packs. Call first and tell the recycler that the battery is damaged or swollen.
For intact removable lithium-ion batteries, EPA generally recommends protecting terminals against short circuits. For a swollen laptop pack, follow the manufacturer's and recycler's instructions rather than improvising packaging or dismantling the pack yourself.

No practical consumer repair restores a swollen lithium-ion pouch cell to trustworthy service.
