Is It Bad to Use a Laptop While Charging?

Understand overcharging myths, gaming on AC power, heat, 80% charge limits, Smart charging, and the best setup for laptops that stay plugged in.

Using a laptop while plugged in is normal. Modern laptops are designed to operate from external power while managing the battery automatically, so working, browsing, coding, editing, or gaming with the charger connected does not inherently “overcharge” the battery.

The more useful question is what happens when the laptop stays hot and near a high state of charge for long periods. That is why current Windows laptops, MacBooks, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Surface devices offer smart charging or charge-limit features.

Heavy gaming adds another wrinkle: some performance laptops can temporarily use battery power even while plugged in if system demand exceeds adapter capacity.

Quick answer

Yes, you can use a laptop normally while it charges

No. Using a modern laptop while it is charging is generally normal and expected. You do not need to shut the laptop down every time you charge it, and a properly designed lithium-ion system does not keep forcing energy into a battery indefinitely after it reaches its charging target.

Lenovo's current Battery Q&ALenovo Support says extended plugged-in use does not overcharge the battery. It also explains that, with the correct adapter, the battery is not normally powering the system while the laptop is plugged in; a lower-wattage adapter may require the battery to provide supplemental power during peak load.

However, two conditions can increase long-term wear:

  • High temperature
  • Spending long periods at or near a very high state of charge

Microsoft's Smart charging guidanceMicrosoft Support says keeping a lithium-ion battery charged to 100% all the time can make it deteriorate faster, which is why some Windows laptops intentionally hold charge below 100%. Apple's current Mac charging guidanceApple Support similarly uses Optimized Battery Charging and, on supported Apple-silicon Macs with macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, a selectable 80–100% Charge Limit.

So the practical answer is:

Use the laptop while charging. Keep it reasonably cool. Use the manufacturer's smart-charging or charge-limit feature when the laptop spends most of its life plugged in.

What actually happens when you use a laptop while plugged in?

A laptop's power-management system coordinates three things:

  1. the external power adapter;
  2. the computer's immediate power demand; and
  3. the battery's charging or discharging state.

When a suitable charger provides enough power, the system can run the laptop and charge the battery according to its charging logic. Once the battery reaches its target, charging can pause even though the adapter remains connected.

That target may be below 100% because of Windows Smart charging, Dell Primarily AC Use, HP Battery Health Manager, Lenovo thresholds, or Mac Charge Limit.

So “plugged in” and “charging” are not synonyms. The battery may be charging, held at a limit, fully charged and idle, or even supplementing adapter power under an extreme workload.

Charging myth

Can a modern laptop battery be overcharged?

Under normal operation with a functional laptop, battery-management system, and appropriate charger, the old idea of a laptop continuously “overcharging” once it reaches full is not a useful model.

Lenovo states directly that its mobile PC batteries are designed to stop using the charger when full charge is reached. Microsoft and Apple likewise describe systems that intentionally pause or hold charging based on battery state and usage patterns.

That does not mean leaving a battery hot and at 100% indefinitely has zero aging effect. “Not overcharging” and “optimal long-term storage condition” are different questions.

A battery can be protected from electrical overcharge while still aging faster because it spends months at a high state of charge or elevated temperature. That is the problem smart charging is designed to reduce.

Calendar aging

Why staying at 100% can still matter even without overcharging

Lithium-ion battery aging includes calendar aging: capacity loss that occurs with time even when the battery is not completing many cycles.

Recent research continues to show that temperature and state of charge influence calendar aging. A 2024 commercial lithium-ion calendar-aging studyScienceDirect found storage temperature had a significant effect, while a 2025 Journal of Power Sources studyScienceDirect found greater high-temperature exposure accelerated degradation.

That is consistent with Microsoft, Surface, Apple, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all offering lower-charge or adaptive modes for long AC use. Those features are evidence that high state of charge is a real long-term design consideration, not a reason to panic over every full charge.

Desk-bound use

Is it bad to leave a laptop plugged in all day?

Not automatically.

If your laptop is a desktop replacement, leaving it on AC can be reasonable. Dell's current battery performance guideDell Support recommends Primarily AC Use for that pattern. HP's Battery Health ManagerHP Support can limit supported business notebooks to 80% of design capacity, and Lenovo recommends an upper threshold of 80% or less for always-plugged systems.

A supported charge-management feature is generally more sensible than manually unplugging at arbitrary percentages all day.

Avoid forced cycling

Should you unplug the laptop at 100% and run it down every time?

No.

Modern lithium-ion laptop batteries do not need repeated full charge-discharge cycles to avoid a “memory effect.” Lenovo explicitly says lithium-ion batteries do not need full discharge to maintain optimal runtime or performance.

Unplugging every time the battery reaches 100%, discharging it deeply, and reconnecting it can add unnecessary cycling without solving the high-state-of-charge issue in a particularly intelligent way.

A better pattern is:

  • use AC power when that suits your work;
  • use the battery when mobility requires it;
  • enable the manufacturer's smart charging or charge threshold if the machine lives on a desk;
  • avoid unnecessary deep discharges;
  • and prioritize temperature management.

Charging flexibility

Is the 20–80 rule mandatory?

No. It is a useful battery-care concept, not a law.

For a desk-bound laptop, an 80% upper limit can reduce time spent at high state of charge when the manufacturer supports it. But if you need maximum unplugged runtime for travel, meetings, field work, or classes, charging to 100% is reasonable.

Microsoft explicitly says users may want to turn off Smart charging when traveling or when they expect to be away from outlets. Apple provides Charge to Full Now on current Macs that are being held below 100%.

The best charging target therefore depends on what you need next.

Do not sacrifice hours of useful runtime merely to protect a theoretical future percentage when the whole purpose of the battery is to power your work away from an outlet.

Gaming and heat

Is gaming while charging bad for the laptop battery?

Gaming while plugged in is usually the right way to run a performance laptop because sustained CPU/GPU loads can demand substantial power.

The main battery-health concern is heat, not simply the connected charger. Keep vents unobstructed, use a hard surface, maintain cooling paths, keep firmware current, and use a manufacturer charge limit if the machine spends most of its life on AC. Repeatedly unplugging during a game simply shifts the workload onto the battery and can add cycles.

Hybrid power

Why some gaming laptops lose battery while plugged in

A plugged-in gaming laptop can sometimes lose battery under very heavy load. Microsoft's slow charging and discharge guidanceMicrosoft Support lists underpowered chargers, wrong ports, and inadequate cables as causes.

Dell also documents Hybrid Power Mode on some gaming laptops: when demand exceeds adapter capacity, the battery can temporarily supplement the adapter. So a small drop under extreme gaming is not automatically a charger failure.

Power budgeting

Does using the laptop while charging make it charge more slowly?

It can.

When the system is active, the adapter must power the workload as well as charge the battery. Microsoft recommends charging while the PC is asleep or off when faster charging is needed, and Apple's current Mac charging guidanceApple Support emphasizes sufficient charger wattage.

Heavy use can therefore slow charging or, with an underpowered adapter, even cause discharge.

USB-C wattage

Can a phone charger damage a laptop if you use it while charging?

The larger risk is usually insufficient power, not that a low-wattage USB-C phone charger somehow forces too much power into the laptop.

If both devices support compatible USB Power Delivery, a laptop may negotiate a supported power level. But a 20 W or 30 W adapter may be far below what a laptop needs under load.

Microsoft says a charger that does not meet the PC's requirements can lead to slow charging or discharge while plugged in. Charger, cable, port, and laptop all need to support the required power level.

Does using a laptop while charging increase battery temperature?

Charging and operating the laptop both create heat, so heavy CPU/GPU work while charging can make the system warmer than idle charging.

Normal active charging is expected; the goal is to avoid unnecessary sustained heat. Apple says a Mac may pause charging when battery temperature is too high, and Surface Smart Charging also considers elevated temperature. Heat matters more than obsessing over a few percentage points.

Choose by workload

Is it better to use the laptop plugged in or on battery?

There is no universally better mode.

Plugged in is better when:

  • you need maximum performance;
  • you are gaming, rendering, compiling, or doing sustained heavy work;
  • you are at a desk near power;
  • your manufacturer provides an AC-use or charge-limit mode.

Battery power is better when:

  • you need mobility;
  • you are traveling;
  • you are testing real battery runtime;
  • using AC is inconvenient.

The laptop is designed for both.

A battery is a consumable component, so trying to eliminate every charge cycle is not the goal. The better objective is to avoid needless heat and unnecessary time at stressful charge conditions while still using the computer normally.

Windows Smart charging: what “plugged in, not charging” can mean

Windows Smart charging can make a healthy laptop appear as if it has stopped charging.

Microsoft says Smart charging may set the battery to a lower level that is better for long-term health. A heart icon can appear over the battery icon, and the system may report Fully Smart charged even though the device is plugged in below 100%.

That is intentional.

Each manufacturer implements Smart charging differently, so Windows directs users to the device manufacturer's documentation for the exact behavior.

On supported Surface models, Surface Smart ChargingMicrosoft Support can limit maximum charge to 80% when prolonged AC use or elevated temperatures are detected.

Before troubleshooting a battery that stops at 80%, check whether a health feature is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

macOS behavior

MacBook charging while in use

Using a MacBook while it charges is normal.

Current macOS battery features are specifically designed to manage long plugged-in sessions. Apple's Optimized Battery Charging can delay charging past 80%, and on Apple-silicon Macs with macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, Charge Limit allows a target between 80% and 100%.

Apple says the Mac may occasionally charge to 100% even with a lower limit so it can maintain accurate state-of-charge estimates.

If you need maximum charge for a trip, Charge to Full Now temporarily overrides the limit.

This is a better workflow than manually disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter every time the battery moves a few percentage points.

Dell charging modes

Dell: Standard vs Primarily AC Use

Dell's battery-management options illustrate why “should I stay plugged in?” has no one-size-fits-all answer.

Dell currently offers Standard, Primarily AC Use, Adaptive, Custom, and ExpressCharge modes on supported systems. Primarily AC Use can intentionally keep charge in a lower range instead of reaching 100%.

If your Dell lives on a desk, an AC-use mode is more logical than forcing daily deep cycles.

HP charging modes

HP Battery Health Manager for desk-bound notebooks

Supported HP business notebooks offer a similar idea. Maximize Battery Health Management limits available full charge capacity to 80% of design capacity for primarily AC-connected systems.

Lenovo charging modes

Lenovo Battery Charge Threshold for always-plugged use

Lenovo's guidance is unusually direct.

For users who are always connected to AC power, Lenovo recommends using Battery Charge Threshold in Lenovo Vantage and setting the upper limit to 80% or less. Lenovo says this minimizes unnecessary degradation and reduces the potential for abnormal swelling.

It also notes that a full battery may not begin recharging immediately after dropping one or two points; some systems wait until the battery falls below a threshold before starting another charge.

That behavior avoids constant tiny recharge cycles and should not automatically be diagnosed as a charger problem.

Performance impact

Does a charge limit reduce laptop performance?

Normally, a battery charge limit changes how full the battery is allowed to become, not the CPU or GPU's maximum AC-powered performance.

HP explicitly says its 80%-oriented Battery Health Manager setting does not affect system performance on affected business notebooks.

Performance while plugged in depends more on the laptop's power profile, thermal limits, charger capacity, and hardware configuration.

A lower charge ceiling mainly changes how much unplugged runtime you have after disconnecting AC.

Check battery-management settings before assuming failure.

Cycle context

Does leaving the charger connected increase cycle count?

Usually, less battery discharge means equivalent full cycles accumulate more slowly. But cycle count is not the only way lithium-ion batteries age.

A battery can have relatively few cycles and still lose capacity through calendar aging, heat exposure, and long periods at high state of charge.

This is why optimizing for the smallest possible cycle count is not enough. A laptop held hot at 100% all year can still age despite a low counter.

Use cycle count as historical context, not a health score.

Older laptops

Should you remove the battery while using AC power?

For most modern laptops, this is not relevant because the battery is internal.

On an older laptop with a user-removable battery, removing it may be possible, but doing so changes practical behavior: you lose backup power during an outage and may expose the battery to poor storage conditions if it is left fully charged, empty, or hot.

Follow the laptop manufacturer's service and storage guidance rather than turning battery removal into a generic rule.

Is using a laptop while charging bad after a battery replacement?

Normal active use is still fine after a properly installed compatible replacement battery.

The priorities are:

  • verify the laptop recognizes the new battery correctly;
  • use the correct charger;
  • install current firmware and battery-management software;
  • follow any manufacturer-specific initialization or calibration guidance;
  • check that smart charging or custom thresholds still behave correctly.

  1. Use the correct charger with sufficient wattage.
  2. Enable the manufacturer's battery-health mode.
  3. Use an 80%-style ceiling when the manufacturer recommends it for AC use.
  4. Charge to 100% when you need maximum unplugged runtime.
  5. Keep cooling paths clear.
  6. Do not deep-discharge just to “exercise” the battery.
  7. Keep BIOS/firmware and power utilities current.
  8. Track long-term capacity rather than tiny daily changes.
  9. Investigate abnormal heat, swelling, or shutdowns.
  10. Use the laptop normally.
