How to Store a Laptop Battery Long-Term

Choose the right charge level, storage temperature, shutdown method and recharge interval without confusing everyday charging advice with OEM storage procedures.

Lithium-ion batteries experience calendar aging even while a laptop is powered off. Storage temperature, state of charge, time, and standby electronics influence what condition the battery will be in months later.

That is why neither “charge it to 100% and put it away” nor intentionally draining it to 0% is a good universal plan.

For many laptops, the best starting point is a moderate charge level, cool dry storage, and a full shutdown. But OEM procedures differ: Microsoft uses roughly 40–60%, Apple and Dell about 50%, Lenovo around 40% for longer storage, while HP and Google start higher before a low-drain Ship Mode or battery-disconnect state.

This guide explains those differences so you can store a laptop for a school break, deployment, resale, seasonal use, spare-device rotation, or several months of non-use without confusing a manufacturer-specific procedure with a universal battery rule.

Quick answer

Start with the storage mode—not a universal percentage

For a laptop without a manufacturer-specific storage mode, a practical target is usually around 40–60% charge.

Microsoft’s current Windows battery-care guidanceMicrosoft Support recommends approximately 40–60% for device storage and warns against storing a lithium-ion battery either fully charged or completely discharged.

Apple’s current battery performance guidanceApple recommends about 50%, powering the device down, keeping it cool and moisture-free, and returning it to about 50% every six months for longer storage.

Dell’s July 2026 laptop battery FAQDell Support recommends about 50% before storing a laptop for more than four days.

But do not force every laptop into the same 50% rule.

HP recommends 80–90% before enabling Ship Mode on supported laptops and then checking every three months. Google recommends around 80% before putting Chromebooks into the battery-disconnect state.

So the best rule is:

Use the manufacturer’s storage/ship-mode procedure when one exists. Otherwise, moderate charge around 40–60% is a strong default.

Why storing a laptop at 100% is not ideal

A battery does not stop aging when charging stops.

At high state of charge, the cell remains at a higher electrochemical potential. Over long periods, that can increase some of the side reactions associated with capacity loss.

Microsoft specifically says batteries stored at higher charge levels tend to lose capacity faster over time.

A 2024 study of commercial lithium-ion cells under realistic calendar-aging conditions found that storage temperature had a significant effect and that cells stored at 50% state of charge showed the least capacity loss among the tested conditions. See the calendar-aging studyScienceDirect.

That laboratory result does not make exactly 50% universally perfect. The practical conclusion is narrower: without a special OEM procedure, there is usually no benefit to parking a lithium-ion laptop at 100% for months.

Deep-discharge risk

Why storing a laptop at 0% is worse

Zero percent on-screen does not mean the cells contain literally zero energy. The BMS keeps a reserve, but battery electronics can continue consuming a small amount while stored.

Over enough time, a deeply discharged pack can fall below the voltage needed for normal recharge.

Microsoft therefore warns against storing devices completely discharged.

Apple says a battery stored fully discharged can fall into a deep-discharge state that can leave it unable to hold a charge.

Google gives the same warning for Chromebooks: even while turned off, a battery slowly loses charge, and if left long enough at a very low level it might no longer recharge normally.

The storage target needs headroom in both directions: avoid months near full charge, but also leave enough reserve to prevent self-discharge from pushing the pack into deep discharge.

What is calendar aging?

Battery wear comes from more than charging cycles.

Cycle aging comes from energy being charged into and discharged from the battery.

Calendar aging occurs with the passage of time, including while a battery sits unused.

So an old laptop can have few cycles yet noticeably reduced capacity.

Temperature

Storage temperature matters as much as charge level

A moderate charge level cannot compensate for storing a laptop in extreme heat.

Microsoft says excessive heat can accelerate permanent lithium-ion capacity loss.

Apple’s general battery guidance recommends a cool, moisture-free environment below 32°C/90°F for long-term storage. Current MacBook Pro handling guidance goes further and calls approximately 22°C/71°F ideal for extended storage.

Avoid parked vehicles, direct sunlight, radiators, hot attics, damp spaces, and heat-generating equipment.

Specification nuance

“Storage temperature range” is not the same as “ideal storage temperature”

Laptop manuals sometimes publish very wide storage-temperature specifications.

Those numbers describe conditions the device is designed to tolerate—not the conditions that minimize battery aging.

For example, Apple publishes wider permitted storage ranges for Mac hardware while separately recommending a cool environment and about 22°C/71°F for long-term MacBook Pro storage.

Do not read “storage range: -20°C to 45°C” and conclude 45°C is a good six-month storage temperature.

An allowable environmental limit and an ideal battery-aging condition answer different questions.

Whenever both are available, prioritize the manufacturer’s long-term battery-storage recommendation, not the most extreme number in the technical specifications.

Microsoft

Microsoft Windows laptops: store around 40–60%

Microsoft’s current Windows guidance provides one of the clearest general recommendations.

For a Windows device being stored:

  • leave the battery around 40–60%;
  • avoid storing it fully charged;
  • avoid storing it fully discharged;
  • use a cool dry location;
  • periodically check the charge during long storage;
  • prevent the battery from falling into deep discharge.

This is general Windows guidance. If the laptop maker publishes a model-specific storage procedure, follow it.

Apple

How to store a MacBook for months

Apple’s current MacBook Pro documentation is unusually specific.

For extended storage, Apple recommends:

  • a cool location;
  • ideally around 22°C / 71°F;
  • battery at about 50%;
  • and, for storage longer than five months, returning the battery to about 50% approximately every six months.

When taking a MacBook out of storage, Apple notes that it may need to remain connected to its original adapter for roughly 20 minutes before it can be used if the battery has reached a low state.

Dell

Dell laptops: approximately 50% and cool, dry storage

Dell’s July 2026 battery FAQ says that if you plan to store a laptop for more than four days:

  • charge it to approximately 50%;
  • keep it in a cool, dry place;
  • avoid extreme hot or cold temperatures.

This is much simpler than HP’s ship-mode procedure.

Dell’s recommendation also shows that storage care can matter well before six months; there is little reason to leave an unused system parked at 100% on the charger.

Before returning a very old Dell to service, check its battery health and physical condition.

Lenovo

Lenovo laptops: long storage needs periodic attention

Lenovo’s current Battery Q&ALenovo Support contains specific long-term-storage guidance.

For storage lasting more than four months, Lenovo says batteries should be stored at no more than about 40% charge, kept within the storage-temperature range in the system user guide, and recharged back to around 40% every four months because batteries naturally discharge even while unused.

For supported ThinkPads, Lenovo also documents a Disable Built-in Battery option in firmware before storage/service.

Lenovo’s support document contains 40–50% guidance depending on duration and scenario, so check the exact system user guide rather than applying one percentage universally.

The core Lenovo rule is consistent: moderate charge, no continuous external power, proper storage temperature, and periodic checks.

HP

HP laptops: Ship Mode changes the percentage target

HP is the clearest example of why “always store at 50%” is not universal.

Its current battery-performance guidanceHP Support says that for long-term storage on supported notebooks:

  1. charge or discharge the battery to 80–90%;
  2. place the notebook into Ship Mode according to the user guide;
  3. check the battery every three months;
  4. if it has fallen below 50%, recharge it to 80–90% and re-enter Ship Mode.

HP’s separate Ship Mode guideHP Support explains that Ship Mode reduces battery discharge and can disconnect the battery electronically until AC power is connected again.

Not every HP laptop supports the feature.

So do not charge an ordinary laptop to 90% for storage merely because HP uses 80–90% before Ship Mode. The higher starting level is part of HP’s specific low-drain storage procedure.

ChromeOS

Chromebooks: around 80% plus battery disconnect

Google also uses a special long-term-storage workflow.

For Chromebooks, Google’s current long-term storage guidanceGoogle Chromebook Help recommends charging to around 80% and placing supported devices into a battery-disconnect state.

The Chromebook should then remain powered off until a charger is connected again.

Google says this reduces discharge, avoids months of unnecessary charging/discharging, and keeps the device stably powered off.

If a Chromebook cannot enter battery disconnect, Google says to charge it to around 80%, shut it down, unplug it, and keep it in a cool dry location.

This procedure is especially relevant to schools storing fleets over summer.

AC power

Should you leave a laptop plugged in during storage?

Usually not when the device will be unused for weeks or months.

Lenovo explicitly says systems in long-term storage should not remain connected to a power source.

Google says Chromebooks should not remain plugged into charging carts for months because that can reduce battery life and create other issues.

Microsoft recommends storing at moderate charge rather than keeping the battery full.

Storage means the laptop is not being used, so there is little benefit to maintaining it at a continuously high state of charge.

Power state

Should you shut down, sleep, or hibernate a stored laptop?

For multi-week or multi-month storage, use the manufacturer’s shutdown or storage procedure rather than ordinary Sleep.

Sleep is designed for quick resume, not seasonal storage.

Even efficient modern standby states can consume energy. Over months, that unnecessary drain increases the chance of reaching a critically low battery level.

Apple recommends powering the device down for long-term storage.

HP and Google go further on supported devices by using Ship Mode or battery disconnect.

Hibernate can use less power than Sleep, but for genuine long-term storage a full shutdown or OEM storage mode is simpler.

Removable batteries

Should you remove a removable battery before storage?

Only when the manufacturer supports or recommends removal.

For an older laptop with a user-removable battery, separate storage may be reasonable if the manual allows it. Keep moderate charge, protect contacts, avoid metal objects, use a cool dry location, and check charge periodically.

Do not open a modern thin laptop simply to disconnect an internal battery unless its service documentation tells you to do so.

Some laptops provide a firmware “disable built-in battery” or ship-mode command specifically so the battery can be electrically isolated without improvised disassembly.

Recharge schedule

How often should you check a laptop in storage?

There is no single universal schedule.

Current manufacturer examples:

Check more often if the battery is old, health is low, storage is warm, powered-off drain is noticeable, or the OEM specifies a shorter interval.

Low battery health

What if the battery is already worn before storage?

A worn battery has less energy reserve. If a 60 Wh pack now holds only 36 Wh, displayed 50% represents much less absolute energy than when new, increasing deep-discharge risk during very long storage.

Before storing an older laptop for months:

  1. check battery health;
  2. confirm it charges normally;
  3. inspect it for swelling;
  4. use the manufacturer’s recommended starting percentage;
  5. check it more frequently than a new battery if necessary.

Safety

Do not store a swollen battery

Storage guidance assumes the battery is physically normal.

If the trackpad is lifting, the bottom cover is separating, or the battery is visibly swollen, do not put the laptop into a closet for six months and “check it later.”

Preparation checklist

How to prepare a laptop before long-term storage

A practical storage checklist:

  1. Back up important data.
  2. Install critical firmware/BIOS updates if the OEM storage procedure requires them.
  3. Inspect the battery and chassis for swelling or damage.
  4. Check battery health if the laptop is old.
  5. Set the OEM-recommended charge level.
  6. Enter Ship Mode or battery disconnect when the model supports and recommends it.
  7. Otherwise, shut the laptop down fully.
  8. Disconnect chargers, docks, USB devices, and peripherals.
  9. Store it in a cool, dry, moisture-free location.
  10. Protect it from direct sun, heaters, vehicles, and crushing.
  11. Add a calendar reminder for the OEM’s recommended battery check.

What should you do when taking the laptop out of storage?

If it does not power on immediately, inspect the chassis first. If there is no swelling or damage:

  1. connect the correct charger;
  2. leave it connected for a while before repeated power-button attempts;
  3. exit Ship Mode/battery disconnect according to the OEM procedure;
  4. boot the laptop;
  5. update the operating system and firmware;
  6. charge normally;
  7. check battery health;
  8. test unplugged runtime;
  9. watch for abnormal percentage drops or charging errors.

Apple says a deeply stored device may need roughly 20 minutes on the original adapter before use.

An HP or Chromebook in battery-disconnect mode may specifically require AC power before it can turn on.

If a battery that worked before storage is now undetected or refuses to charge, move to diagnostics rather than repeatedly cycling it.

Cycle count

Does long-term storage reset battery cycle count?

No.

Cycle count is accumulated battery usage. Turning a laptop off for six months does not erase those cycles.

Storage can reduce health through calendar aging, so you may return to the same cycle count but a lower Full Charge Capacity. That is not contradictory.

Cycle count and battery health measure different aspects of the battery’s history and present condition.

Storage myths

Can you put a laptop battery in the refrigerator or freezer?

No.

A refrigerator introduces moisture and condensation risk, while a freezer is even less appropriate.

The goal is cool and dry, not artificially cold.

Apple’s recommended long-term MacBook environment around 22°C/71°F illustrates what “cool” means in practical consumer guidance.

Do not try to slow aging by creating a condensation problem.

Spare batteries

What about storing a spare replacement laptop battery?

A spare battery that is not installed still experiences calendar aging.

If you buy a spare years early, part of its useful life can be consumed on the shelf.

For an undamaged removable spare:

  • follow the battery/OEM storage charge recommendation;
  • protect the terminals;
  • keep it cool and dry;
  • avoid a hot warehouse, vehicle, or direct sun;
  • check it periodically;
  • do not keep it fully discharged.

This is one reason buying a replacement “just in case” several years early is not always economical.

Bottom line

Final verdict: moderate charge, cool storage, and OEM instructions win

There is no single storage percentage that overrides every manufacturer procedure.

For a normal laptop with no special storage mode:

40–60% + full shutdown + cool dry storage + periodic checks is a strong general approach.

But current OEM examples intentionally differ:

  • Microsoft: around 40–60%
  • Apple: about 50%
  • Dell: approximately 50%
  • Lenovo: around 40% for its current longer-term guidance
  • HP: 80–90% before Ship Mode
  • Chromebook: around 80% before battery disconnect

Those differences make sense once you understand the context.

HP and Google start higher because their procedures then place the battery into a special low-drain storage state. Microsoft, Apple, Dell, and Lenovo are giving more conventional moderate-charge guidance.

The principles underneath them are consistent:

avoid months at full charge, avoid deep discharge, minimize unnecessary standby drain, control heat, and check the battery before it becomes critically low.

That is the storage strategy that protects both the battery and the chance that your laptop will start normally when you need it again.
